Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q: What sort of materials are our teams restricted to using for the Y2K Engineering Competition?
A: For Round 1 of the Engineering Competition, you may use any materials necessary to solve the problem so as to qualify for the final competition. All solutions must be sent to the Goddard Education Office for judging consideration.

Q: What kind of prize does the winning team get?
A: There are no prizes for the round 1 competition. Prizes will awarded for the final competition held at the H. B. Owens Science Center on Wednesday, April 19, 2000. The prize for the winning team is described on the competition web site.

Q: We are having difficulty interpreting the problem, could you please send us more specifications. We realise we will be disqualified if we enter because we live in Scotland, but we would like to attempt this interesting problem anyway.
A: We are delighted that you would like to compete unofficially! Perhaps if you would be specific as to what elements of the problem you are having difficulty interpreting, we can forward some suggestions. We realize we may have overlooked certain points, so we need you to be specific as to which part of the problem needs to be explained.

Q: Is it possible to be in the 8th grade for this competition?
A: An 8th or 9th grade student may be a member of their school's competition team if they are in a school which has students in grades 10, 11, and 12 AND their school considers their grade part of the school's "high school." A student in grade 8 in a middle school would not be eligible to participate in this year's competition.
