In order to design a maneuver to enable Terra's instruments to detect the Moon, a knowledge of the Moon's motions around the Earth is necessary. A particularly important effect of the Moon's revolution around the Earth is the Moon's phase, or the angle between the direction of the observation of the Moon from the Earth or from near Earth orbit and the direction of illumination of the Moon by the Sun.
