Competition Rules and Information

Qualifying Round Rules
- This competition is being conducted in two phases. The qualifying round of the competition requires student teams solve an authentic problem encountered in the Terra satellite mission and mail their solution to the problem.
- Teams must consist of 2 - 6 interested secondary school students in grades 9 through 12.
- Each team must have a teacher, school staff member, or school approved adult as a team member.
- Teams are to develop a solution to the problem without the aid of an additional adult.
- The solution must clearly describe what should be done to address the stated problem and the rational for each decision.
- No information identifying the school, or the team can appear on the solution.
- A completed entry form must accompany the solution.
- Qualifying round solutions with a completed entry form may be mailed, postmarked no later then , or submitted electronically to rerwin@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov so that it arrives prior to February 26, 2000
- The decision of the judges is final.

Judging will be completed during the week of March 20, 2000 and teams will be notified at that time.
Qualifying teams will be invited to participate in the final competition.

Round Two (final) Competition Information
Only teams present at the final competition will be eligible to compete for prizes.
The second round (final) competition will be held from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (local time) on Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at the Howard B. Owens Science Center, Greenbelt, Maryland. During the final competition, teams will have a limited time during the day in which to design, develop, and build a solution to a new Terra based problem. Equipment and all materials will be provided, and a computer with internet access will be available for each team's use.

Competition Prizes
Prizes for the winning solution and team recognitions will be given at a ceremony in NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor's Center Auditorium.

Questions about the competition may be submitted by e-mail to the Mr. Ron Erwin, competition coordinator, at rerwin@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov. All questions and answers will be posted on the competition web site so that all competing teams will have the benefit of the information presented. No individual reply will be made to the team submitting the question and no answers will be provided independent of the website.
