You're working with a team of scientists and engineers preparing an experiment.
Your task: to monitor the health of a coral reef using a digital camera mounted in the Destiny module of the International Space Station as it orbits the Earth at more than 7000 meters per second and an altitude of almost 400 kilometers...

Welcome!
to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Virtual Science, Engineering and Technology (VSET) Investigations Competition
Here is your chance to interact with NASA scientists and engineers in a competition that challenges you with science and engineering investigations based on real NASA flight projects. What you read above is the first VSET investigation problem. We invite you to explore these pages to learn more about VSET and hope that you'll take on the challenge!

What is VSET?
The VSET is an opportunity for middle level (Grades 5-8) students from Washington, D.C. to Maine to take on the science and engineering challenges of a real NASA flight project. The competition features science and engineering problems developed by Goddard flight project teams. Students and teams of students who participate will research the problem, develop an approach to solve the challenge, and then electronically present a report of their approach.
All project submission and judging will be completed entirely over the Internet.
Who Can Compete?
All middle level (Grades 5-8) students in the Goddard service area (MD, PA, DE, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, ME, and the DC metro area including northern VA) are eligible. See the Rules section for more details
When is VSET?
The Fall 2002 VSET submissions will run from October 1 to March 17, 2003 with results announced by April 11, 2003. The Rules section will be updated to include submission deadlines and judging schedule.
What Do Students Win?
Winners of the VSET will participate in recognition activities at the Goddard Space Flight Center, including observing student competitons associated with the T.E.A.M.S robotics tournament Students may have an opportunity to win a laptop computer, printer and scanner for their school, and a Palm Pilot for their personal use.
