Abstract:

This activity will encourage students to experience the process of weather forecasting. By the use of GOES satellite imagery and surface maps, the student will plot the development and motion of a mid-latitude cyclone and forecast it’s future movements.

Outcomes:

• Outcome 1 - The student will collect a series of 6-8 sequential GOES satellite images.
  
  
• Outcome 2 - The student will analyze the cloud patterns and motion in order to identify developing mid-latitude cyclones (low pressure systems).
  
  
• Outcome 3 - The student will compare satellite imagery to surface maps for the same time period in order to connect the cloud patterns to frontal and pressure systems.
  
  
• Out come 4 - The student will forecast the movement of the mid-latitude cyclone based upon their observations and will then evaluate this information to determine if it is necessary to post any watches or warnings for severe weather.
  
  

Suggested Grade Level & Duration:
This activity will be most appropriate for a 9-12 Earth Science class. It will be necessary to run the activity over a period of 5 days regardless of the length of the period.
