Abstract:
Worldwide volcanic activity can be monitored by GOES images obtained every 30 minutes. The airline industry monitors this activity to maintain safe flights. The volcanic ash clouds can affect airplane engines as silicate cloud particles enters the engine and melt on the engine parts.
Outcome:

• After completing this activity, the student will look at two different GOES images, choosing the appropriate image for looking at volcanic activity.
  
• The student will determine the difference between the visible and infrared channels collected by the GOES satellite.
  
• The student will see other applications to a satellite that was intended for weather.
