ATMOSPHERE TO BIOSPHERE:
Incoming cooler air masses and/or ones that are more humid can
diminish impact of 'hot spots' in burned over areas.
Blackened areas absorb more energy from sun causing higher ground
temperatures than usual. With soil moisture extremely low, surviving
seeds of all types plus wind blown seeds and spores must rely
on rain to start.
BIOSPHERE TO HYDROSPHERE:
Destruction of stream-side habitat (and cover) can raise water
temperatures.
HYDROSPHERE TO BIOSPHERE:
Any heavy rains likely to increase pollutants/debris brought to
streams. Pollution by particulates can injure fish by clogging
gills.
LITHOSPHERE TO ATMOSPHERE:
Blackened areas can absorb heat faster increasing rate of convection
in cells. May move masses through a burned area quicker and/or
cause moist air to move vertically faster increasing rain further
downwind.
ATMOSPHERE TO LITHOSPHERE:
Any heavy rains are likely to result in much higher runoff than
usual.
EVENT TO ATMOSPHERE:
Flaming embers carried by winds to create new fires, jump firelines.
Air masses moving in are 'dried' further by fires.
Smoke and particulates put into air carry downwind for hundreds
and hundreds of miles.
ATMOSPHERE TO EVENT:
Intense updrafts from burning trees draws in oxygen at base of
flames causing an increase in wind velocity.
EVENT TO BIOSPHERE:
Surface habitat severely altered in some areas. Slow moving animal
life typically destroyed in fire areas; some larger, more mobil
animals trapped by fire.
Plant litter on ground burned off.
After fire: Snags created for raptors and owls to perch.
Expect an increase in wood boring and eating insects - which will
provide food for next year's migrating birds
Some animals die due to exposure and/or difficulty in finding
grazing.
Lodgepole pine cones on ground opened by fire, seeds exposed.
EVENT TO HYDROSPHERE:
Soil moisture removed to some depths in fire scarred areas.
Some particulates from fire land in streams.
Little impact of fire on underground 'plumbing' system of hot
springs and geysers.
EVENT TO LITHOSPHERE:
Soil has humus baked out of it in places, to varying depths depending
on intensity of fire at a place. Some fusing of soil mineral grains
possible again depending on intensity and duration of fire at
a place.
